Center for sustainable battery research decided

The Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the end of April 2025 to establish the Berlin Battery Lab. This lab will pool the expertise of the three institutions to advance the development of sustainable battery technologies. The joint research infrastructure will also be open to industry for pioneering projects in this field. The Berlin Battery Lab (BBL) will combine the strengths of the three partner institutions: BAM has internationally recognized expertise in battery safety and electrochemical energy materials, HU Berlin is a leader in academic research on sodium-ion batteries and HZB is particularly active in research on lithium-sulfur batteries, the BAM statement read. The laboratory aims to accelerate the transfer of material developments into marketable products. The BBL activities lead to the production of demonstrator cells and thus form an interface to safety and application tests. By working together on basic research through to applied research and certification, it is hoped that the transition from research to industrial application will be faster. The Berlin Battery Lab wants to be open to industrial partners from all over Germany and Europe. Existing partnerships, such as with BASF, are to be further expanded. Physical laboratories are also planned in Berlin to support research and development on site.
