Such waterproof smartphones, of course, we want to use outdoors and take with us on trips. To ensure that the lithium battery-the rechargeable battery-is safe in your smartphone, you should only buy a smartphone in which the lithium battery (rechargeable battery) meets all legal requirements and has passed all tests... This is because lithium cells/batteries (accumulators) are dangerous materials, can quickly catch fire and and are therefore subject to strict regulations.
The lithium cell or lithium battery must have been manufactured according to a quality management program described in the transport regulations and must have successfully passed the UN Test Series 38.3 of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria.
For example, the UN 38.3 test series simulates transport conditions such as pressure, temperature, crush, impact, short circuit, discharge, etc.

This is to ensure safety in handling and transportation. And shipping or transporting without these conditions is prohibited worldwide.

If you have decided to buy a smartphone, make sure the distributor or the manufacturer BEFORE you buy it, whether the lithium battery meets these requirements. If so, you may take the smartphone on air travel or send it as a gift.

All manufacturers, distributors or subsequent distributors (including large online retailers) are required to provide this information ON REQUEST since January 01, 2020.

They do not have to be enclosed with the goods and also do not have to be listed on the product data sheet of the device.

This makes it difficult for you as a distributor, and even more so for the buyer, to find out whether your battery has been manufactured in compliance with the regulations.

As a distributor, you often have to persistently ask the manufacturer until you get the right documents.
Refrain from buying goods where this information is not given to you correctly or where you may not receive an answer at all!

Because in principle a transport of series lithium cells and batteries is forbidden, if these two conditions are not fulfilled.

We at LITHIUM BATTERY SERVICE are pleased about every distributor who checks for the benefit and safety of his customers whether the transport regulations are observed for the lithium battery. This prevents dangers that could occur at the customer's home due to counterfeit and untested lithium battery technology.

Therefore, we call on all distributors to reassure the smartphone manufacturer that each lithium cell and battery in the devices meets all requirements.

Therefore, before you as a distributor purchase and import devices with lithium cells and lithium batteries, you should make a supplier inquiry.
For this purpose, you can download a form of UN38.3 test summary and supplier inquiry in our portal for FREE, which contains all the important questions about the lithium cells or batteries.
There are inquiries for lithium batteries and lithium cells in English and German.

You are welcome to add your logo to our inquiry, but our copyright is to be left in the footer:

If you want to know more about the UN test series according to 38.3, have a look here at our Lithium Battery Service Portal:

Especially when traveling by air, you are also subject to restrictions as a passenger when carrying lithium cells and lithium batteries in your baggage.
As an air passenger, you can find out how to take dangerous goods with lithium cells or batteries on air travel - in your hand luggage , on your own body or in checked luggage here:

How do you as a customer get the information?

They are usually NOT enclosed with the device, because they have to be provided only ON REQUEST. Therefore you have to ask and be patient and sometimes persistent.

Ask the distributor or manufacturer!
Good specialist distributors can provide this evidence and are aware of their obligation to make this evidence available to the customer on request.

We offer a free supplier inquiry for this purpose, which you can have the distributor/manufacturer of the lithium-ion cell fill out and thus ensure that all legal requirements are met.

We have created separate supplier inquiries, one for lithium cells and one for lithium batteries.
You can download them free of charge in English and German at the following link:

After confirmation, check whether the lithium cell or battery also fits the device and not only general information is given or you have only received a product data sheet.

To help you, we have a checklist UN 38.3 Test summary on our website under DOWNLOADS, with which you can check the information:

Because the transport language is English, you can ask for English confirmations.

If you need to ship or prepare lithium cells and lithium batteries for transport, we provide checklist articles for your transport case, including returns:

Often the question also arises what to do with returns of lithium cells and batteries.

Here we provide you with some help:

And as a distributor, you also have to deal with storage. Here are some tips.
Talk to your insurer about how your company building is covered in the event of a fire due to lithium cells or batteries.

Finally, there is the question of disposal. How this works in your country, if you live in an ADR member state, we have compiled here for you:

We are happy about every company and distributor, if you simply provide your customers with the documents on your website, which you have received from manufacturers of the devices regarding the lithium cells or lithium batteries.

And if you need further training around shipping and preparing lithium cells and batteries for transport by road, sea and air you can find our training courses here. We also offer in-house training for your company and employees:
